Jaguar i-Pace – September car of the month

The Jaguar I-pace is Jaguar’s first fully electric car. As of September 2025, it’s also the first electric car listed on Tarlen by a host.

Much of the I-Pace’s technology comes from Jaguar’s Formula E racing team, who had spent years refining the electric drive systems.

That technology found its way into this road car, making it one of the most advanced EVs in its class.

Hence why it’s Tarlen’s Car of the month for September.

Behind the wheel of Marius’s Jaguar i-Pace

Slip behind the wheel of the Jaguar I-Pace and you quickly forget it’s an electric car. It stays true to Jaguar’s long-standing philosophy of space, pace, and grace.

The I-Pace was built with world-class quality and sharp driving dynamics.

Some even argue it outperforms most electric cars on the market, including Tesla’s Model Y, which comes in at a much higher price point.

Range & Charging

The main complaints about the I-Pace are range anxiety and South Africa’s limited rapid charging support. On paper, the car has a range of 246 miles (396 km).

But most people don’t drive that far in a day. If your commute is around 30 – 40 km, you’d only need to charge once a week.

South Africa’s charging network is also expanding, thanks to companies like GridCars and Rubicon.

Ultra-fast chargers can now power the I-Pace’s lithium-ion battery to 80% in just 45 minutes. You’ll find them at major malls, service stations, and highways.

But if you’d rather not spend hours at that charging station, the I-Pace comes with a single-phase 7kW charger.

Plugging in overnight gives you a full charge in about 10 hours.

Storage & Interior Space

The I-Pace also stands out for its space and comfort. Both driver and passengers get plenty of legroom, making it a genuinely practical SUV.

Boot space is generous too: 656 litres, expanding to 1,453 litres when the rear seats are folded.

Jaguar also made clever use of the missing transmission tunnel. You get a 10.5-litre storage compartment in the cabin, plus a 28-litre front boot, affectionately called the “froot.”

All of this makes the I-Pace one of the most versatile cars you can own, whether electric or not.

Driving the i-Pace

The I-Pace is powered by two electric motors, one on each axle, that deliver a combined 394 hp with zero lag.

Step on the pedal and you feel instant torque, something you’ll never get from a petrol or diesel engine.

Thanks to its balanced weight distribution, Jaguar Land Rover off-road system, and adaptive dynamics, the I-Pace feels at home on both city streets and country roads.

It sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. That puts it in the same league as many sports cars, despite being a spacious SUV.

Owning one also gives you access to the Jaguar Remote app. From your phone, you can locate your car, check if it’s locked, monitor charging status, and even pre-condition the cabin and battery for hot or cold weather.
