The rise of the BMW Z4

The 2012 BMW Z4 marks the second generation of this iconic roadster, and with a special distinction. It was the first BMW ever fully designed by female designers. It was designed by Juliane Blasi (exterior) and Nadya Arnaout (interior).

Together, they reimagined the Z4’s once-controversial design. Softened the lines and gave it a sleeker, more elegant appeal that made it far more desirable in the car market. No surprise then that it picked up multiple vehicle design awards the year it was released.

And now, years later, it’s still turning heads, which is why it’s Tarlen’s Car of the Month for July.

BMW's second generation Z4

This second-gen Z4 was an instant standout from the moment it launched, thanks to its elegant and incredibly sporty look. Its retractable hardtop merged the appeal of the soft-top roadster with the sleek security of hardtop coupe into one roadster, now offering car lovers the best of both worlds.

Earlier versions could open or close the top at 10mph, but by 2012, BMW improved that feature. This Z4 can retract its roof at speeds up to 40km/h. Making it perfect for Cape Town’s spontaneous weather shifts and open-sky drives.

Behind the wheel of Sandra’s BMW Z4

If like me, you wondered the first time you saw the Z4, if it lives up to BMW’s famous tagline, The Ultimate Driving Machine. Here’s your answer: Absolutely

Engine Horse power Model 0–100 km/h Top-speed Daily Price

181 hp
sDrive20i
6.9 seconds
235 km/h (146 mph)

You know the moment you get into a Z4 that it was designed for performance. With the cabin positioned just over the rear wheels, you get a commanding view of the long, sculpted hood which helps you feel every curve on the road. And we mean this literally. The cabin position increases the feeling of rotation when driving through corners. And since you’re practically sitting at the back of the car, there’s no waiting for the rest of the car to make a turn with you.

This dynamic and balanced ride will make you always want to take the long way home.

Inside the Z4’s cabin, BMW did not compromise on its premium performance motif. From the high-quality leather seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel to the gearshift stick with driving mode controls, every element feels purpose-built.

The binocular-style instrument cluster, responsive steering wheel controls gives drivers easy access to the features in the central stack, making it a driver’s cockpit through and through.

Whether you’re cruising Chapman’s Peak, exploring the Winelands, or just rolling through the city, this Z4 was made for you to fall in love with driving again.
